Early Life
Akash was born on 25 November 1993 in Dungra Village, Almora District, Uttarakhand. Akash’s father Ghananand Madhwal was posted in the army wing in Roorkee; his father died in 2010. His mother Asha is a housewife and he has one brother Ashish.
Akash completed his schooling at Roorkee Public Secondary School and then graduated with a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, Roorkee.
He had a passion for playing cricket since childhood. Akash used to play with his brother Ashish with a plastic bat and ball which their father brought for them. Akash is not married nor does he have any girlfriend. He has a tattoo of OM on his right arm.
Career
After completing his civil engineering degree Akash chose to pursue cricket instead of engineering. He used to work on his yorker bowling technique when he used to play tennis ball cricket in Uttrakhand. Due to this, he got a master’s in delivering yorkers.
At the age of 24, Akash first competed in organized cricket; when he was called for Uttarakhand Cricket Association trials after they were affiliated with BCCI in 2018.
Uttarakhand team’s coach Wasim Jaffer recognized Akash Madhwal’s talent and advised him to opt for red ball cricket. Then, he was selected for the state team by Jaffer and coach Manish Jha trained him.
During starting days, he was trained by Avtar Singh who had previously coached Rishabh Pant.
Akash Madhwal made his domestic debut in November 2019 when he played for Uttarakhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy tournament.
In December 2019, he made his Ranji Trophy debut. In February 2021, Akash played his first List A match for Uttarakhand.
Akash was appointed as the captain of Uttarakhand’s T20 team for showing his leadership development.
Akash’s Career in IPL
Akash served as a net bowler for Royal Challengers Banglore in the 2021 IPL. He gained exposure in 2022 when he joined the defending champions Mumbai Indians as a net bowler. He was drafted into the full squad of Mumbai Indians when Suryakumar Yadav got injured but he never played.
In the 2023 IPL, Akash was allowed to bowl against Punjab Kings at Mohali and he marked his debut with an amazing entrance into the league. He gave 37 runs in his starting 3 overs without any wickets but in the final over he showcased his expertise.
Akash’s bowling style was reminiscent of Jasprit Bumrah’s style when used to bowl yorkers. In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Akash shines brightly recording 4/37.
During the eliminator match against the Lucknow Super Gianst Akash registered an impressive 5/5 in just 3.3 overs. It restricted the opponent to make 101 runs in response to Mumbai’s target of 183 runs.
This was the record-breaking performance of Akash Madhwal that broke Doug Bollinger’s 2010 record against Chennai Super Kings. He became the first cricketer to claim 5 wickets in an IPL playoff.
