Do you like reading about haunted places? What about reading at a haunted place? Scary, right? But a lot of people do that. Yes, there are some haunted libraries around the world that have the spirits of the previous owners.
So, why do people go there in the very first place? In the daylight, it is absolutely fine, but the eerie feeling kicks in when it’s night and the libraries are closed.
Yes, I have been to that place, and I can tell the difference between day and night. In the daylight, these places look absolutely normal, but as soon as the sun sets, it becomes absolutely different. To be specific, it becomes scary.
But have you ever wondered whether all these stories are real or not? I mean, sometimes there isn’t even a ghost but just stories.
However, the stories that I’m going to tell you are not stories but historical facts. Yes, it is true that there might be some exaggeration. But I will try my best to just portray the truth in front of you.
So, without any further delay, let’s start with our first library on the list. This library is situated in my hometown, and I studied there in my college years.
National Library of Kolkata
The National Library, situated in the city of joy, is one of the most haunted libraries in the country. It is perhaps the only haunted Library in the city. But what is it haunted by?
The library is haunted by the ghost of Warren Hastings, the governor-general of the East India Company at that time. It is said that the ghost roams around the building in search of a document.
You might not know that Warren was accused of something, and in order to prove his innocence, he needed a document, but sadly, he couldn’t find it.
So, basically, his ghost is still searching for the document to prove his innocence. The night guards often carry hanuman Chalisa with them.
Apart from that, the archaeologists have also found a secret chamber in the 250-year-old building. It has no doors or anything to enter.
The building actually belonged to Mir Zafar, which he later gifted to Warren Hastings. What do you think? What could possibly be inside the chamber, skeletons, or that secret document?
The government hasn’t announced any further research on this matter. Honestly, I don’t think they will take this matter further as it might create a fuss, and people will be scared to come to the library.
Felbrigg Hall of England
Felbrigg Hall is one of those haunted libraries which has seen a lot of things. The place belongs to William Windham, who died a brutal death.
You know, when I found out about the story, I was shocked. It is said that William Windham loved books, and this love became the reason for his death.
I know I’m sounding like a ghost storyteller, but it is the truth only. So, here is what happened.
William was very fond of books, and he always loved exploring books in the precious library of his neighbor and friend. But one day, the house caught fire, and so did the library.
He didn’t want that to happen and tried to save the books but ended up hurting himself on the hips.
His bones were broken, and further surgery to fix them caused his death. It is said that if someone arranges certain books in a certain way, a ghost might appear in front of them.
A lot of people have heard William’s voice in the library. But nobody has tried to arrange the books because it is impossible to know which books were his favorite.
Houston Public Library of Texas
Houston Public Library is known for the tragic death of the guard. He used to live in teh basement of the library with his german shepherd.
One day, he was found dead, and his dog couldn’t be found. So, what do you think? Who could have killed him? Was it a natural death or something supernatural?
According to reports, people have heard his footsteps and some other eerie sounds. Currently, the property is under government speculation.
I also want to know what could have possibly happened.
The Old Bernardsville Public Library of New Jersey
You know, I was always fascinated with murder or assassination stories that took place in times of war. The story of this haunted library is also like this.
People claim that the library is haunted by two lovers. Yes, a spy of the British Army took shelter in Bernardsville as doctor Byram.
Soon, he became attracted to the daughter of that house. But later, he was caught and hanged to death.
Though I am not sure how many people have actually seen the ghosts, yes, something is there for sure. Would you like to see the lovers?
Morelia Public Library of Mexico
Now, this is one of the scariest stories I have ever seen. The national geographic team went for an investigation, and according to them, something was there.
One of them said that he could clearly feel that someone was following him, and he also heard footsteps.
Apart from that, locals claim that they have seen fireballs on the stairs and a man reading books at the fireplace, who later vanished.
The most popular ghost there was “Nun in Blue.” It is said that she used to take care of the library. Well, it seems that she is not done with her job yet.
Final Words
I know you have just finished a book by Gaur Gopal Das, and you don’t want anything negative. But if there is positivity, there must be some negativity too!
Moreover, you are reading this article, so you do like such stuff, right? No worries, these places are not the haunted libraries that we see in the movies; scary and gruesome. They look as normal as in any other place.
The ghostly incidents are very subtle, and you might not feel them if you don’t notice them properly. Those are just spirits living there for centuries.
This is why people say that places have memories. What they actually have is nothing but spirits that can be scary or just like humans, and they have memories. So, which haunted library are you planning to go?
Who knows, you might be going to the one that is already haunted!
